These varieties, referred to as Southern Indica Azaleas, are more vigorous and are more tolerant of sun than their Belgian Indica cousins. Most will grow to 4 feet tall and wide or more. In hot valley areas plant Southern Indica azaleas in morning sun and provide some protection from afternoon sun. In more temperate regions, Southern Indicas will acclimate to full sun with ample water and good drainage. Use for mass planting, foundations or train as standard trees or topiary forms. As with all azaleas, plant in soil that has been amended with peat moss or a soil mix specifically designed for acid-loving plants. Be sure to place the root-ball slightly higher than soil level to avoid future crown rot. Avoid cultivating around Azaleas as they are shallow rooters. Keep plants evenly moist, provide mulch around plants and occasionally deep water to flush out any salt accumulation. Below are a few of our most popular varieties.
