In Southern California fall is the ideal time to plant those cool season crops that prefer cool nights and moderate daytime temperatures. These include all the cruciferous vegetables (Cabbage, Cauliflower, Brussel Sprouts, Kale), many of the leafy vegetables, as well as peas, carrots, onions, and radishes. Plant cool season vegetables in October and November when extended periods of hot weather are past. These healthful crops can be planted in containers, raised beds or incorporate into mixed plantings with flowering annuals and other ornamental plants. Red leafed lettuces and multi-colored chards make interesting additions to flower beds. Harvest head producing crops before the individual florets open up for best flavor. Leafy vegetables should be harvested often for a cut-and-come-again supply of succulent greens.
